Timex Q Chronograph Review

Today’s watch should help me take a break from all those expensive options around and instead get something nice for a reasonable price. Timex Diver Inspired comes as a logical continuation of the lineup with beautiful affordable watches from the famous brand. My experience with Timex is almost zero, so it will be also interesting to check this watch in person and share the impressions with you.

First of all let me note that there will be two versions available – one with black dial just like mine today and another one with beige dial. Both come in the same case, but you can also vary the strap option. I would like to note that today we are talking about a more classic combo of black dial and black strap.

Here you can read about another interesting watch.

Dial

As usual we start with watchface, let’s check what is offered in my version. First of all, dark color is enhanced with golden accents. I am still not sure how I feel about it, but it is a matter of personal taste for such things.

First thing that comes in gold – large indices and “Q” logo which is placed at the “12” hour mark. Case diameter is 40mm, but there is enough space for large indices and even subdials which are also finished in golden color. Today’s Timex comes with a triple set which looks classic and has clear layout which is legible from the first sight.

I have to note also a bit off date window here. Subdials come in one color, but the date window is in a different white version, which looks strange. I am not a huge fan of this functionality overall, but here it just looks like an extra which doesn’t improve the whole image.

Handset is also in golden color, and it looks just right in the whole styling. For this part I think Timex nailed the whole idea and it is also good to have the stopwatch hand with a lollipop ending. Hours and Minutes have a luminous inset, but don’t expect something unusual here. It just works, and I think it is enough.

I am not a huge fan of writings piling up on the dial, and here is exactly the case when all the text could be smaller. We have Timex, Chronograph, Quartz on the top section under “Q”. I guess somebody wanted to write even more but there is literally no extra space available. In my opinion, the word “Chronograph” on the dial is just such a lame thing that it should be banned in 2025.

Surprisingly, the whole dial is covered with acrylic glass. I was expecting sapphire in this price range, but it is not here. Note the shape of the part as Timex tweaked it to be closer in appearance to the classic watches.

Case

First think about what comes to your mind when you say “classic racing chronograph” and then look at this watch. In my opinion Timex did a great job here and today’s watch looks sleek and elegant just like its predecessors. Case height is 13.5mm, so it is not such a big thing to wear. Combine it with a 40mm size and the whole timepiece is very compact in comparison with modern giant watches.

This is a stainless steel part in silver color with polished-brushed finish combination. I specifically mention the main color as all other parts come in a different color. To me this styling looks a bit off as a golden tachymeter is more or less okay, but golden pushers are just strange. Again, yes this is more of personal taste, so be sure to check it in person.

As for the whole combination of pushers and crown, they come in a classic racing chronograph styling where pushes have tower-like styling. Whole thing is easy to handle, but maybe the crown might be a bit small for some big fingers like mine.

Tachymeter comes in classic golden-black color combination. What is interesting is that part stays the same on other dial color combo too. The font is readable and of course, the whole ring is fixed in place.

Shape and edges might look simple at the first sight, but you should also see this watch in profile view. In my opinion it is actually a good thing that the whole styling is kept to strict guidelines, but there are certain things which look impressive. Overall finish quality is very good for the price.

Rear side is solid with a special hatch for the battery. There is a Timex logo engraved, but that’s pretty much all you will get out of the box. From another view it is a good opportunity to order something to be engraved there. Ah, and before I forget, it is said that the case is made out of recycled steel, whatever it might mean and if you care at all.

Strap

For the strap options, there are two choices available from the factory. First one can be seen in today’s review – black leather with a smooth finish. Second one is a classic stainless steel bracelet. What is cool about classic case styling is that it looks nice in both combinations. Moreover, Timex has chosen 18mm width, so you will have plenty of aftermarket choices.

Timex Q Chronograph Black Leather Strap

Quickrelease bars are in place here, so changing the accessory should be quick and easy. The strap quality is quite fine, buckle comes in classic shape with Timex name engraving there. Overall it is easy to wear, but I guess it is a time to talk about in use experience.

In Use

I recently had the chance to spend some time with the Timex Q Chronograph, and I have some thoughts to share.

The Timex Q Chronograph falls into that popular category of chronographs: everyone wants one, but the extra functions often go unused. That said, I appreciate how the pushers and subdials contribute to the watch’s overall aesthetic without sacrificing legibility. Timex might have been a bit heavy-handed with the text on the dial, but some might find it appealing.

I’m still not entirely convinced by the color scheme. It aims for a classic racing chronograph look, but something feels off, both in photos and in real life. Silver or black pushers would have significantly elevated the design and better captured that classic racing vibe.

The classic design makes the Timex Q Chronograph incredibly versatile when it comes to strap options. This watch practically begs for a perforated leather strap for a sporty look, or a NATO strap for something more casual. While the original strap is fine, exploring different options is part of the fun with a chronograph like this.

The “racing chronograph” designation always puzzles me. What truly distinguishes a racing chronograph from a standard chronograph? A rotating bezel, in my opinion, would have been a fantastic addition, enhancing both functionality and that racing aesthetic. It’s a missed opportunity from Timex, likely due to cost considerations. Which brings us to the all-important question of price…

Timex Q Chronograph – Price and Availability

The Timex Q Chronograph currently retails for around €200. For the style and quality you get, that price point seems reasonable. However, the Timex Q Chronograph isn’t the only quartz chronograph available in this price range. Casio and other brands offer competing options, even stepping into the next tier of watchmakers.

So, what makes the Timex Q Chronograph stand out? It excels in its classic styling and overall finish. Plus, Timex isn’t as ubiquitous in the EU, offering a chance to own something a bit different. Yes, it has some minor quirks, common in this price segment, but they’re easily overlooked if you appreciate the overall design and quality.

I appreciate Timex embracing the vintage trend, and I’m excited to see what they come up with next. What are your thoughts on the Timex Q Chronograph? Share your opinions in the comments below!
