Grand Seiko SBGA407 Hands On

Today we are going to talk about Japanese watch. Well, this is not some kind of digital timepiece, no, Grand Seiko SBGA407 is a completely different beast. Manufacturer and devoted fans call it as a “Blue Snowflake”. One look at the dial will explain everything here. Nevertheless, is it really that nice in real life as on the promo photos? Let’s take a closer look.

Pure Grand Seiko

I have to say that Grand Seiko is kind of different brand for me. It can be connected with successful marketing or great engineering, but watches from this brand live in the class of their own. What might look simple and sleek on the first sight is actually as sophisticated as its counterpart on the market.

Today’s watch is a perfect example. Take a look at this polished steel case (40.2 mm). There are no extra lines, just clean simple design which looks classic. Of course, polished finish is the must in such watch type.

Snowflake

Dial would look elegant and straightforward too, but there is one catch. SBGA407 comes with beautiful light blue dial which is different from all other offerings on the market. Just like this wasn’t enough, Grand Seiko decided to add snowflake texture which is barely visible from the first sight.

Don’t look at photos on official web – they don’t communicate even half of the appeal of such dial. Applied indices come with polished finish and look as sharp as minute and hours hands. I am not sure about power indicator – it is separated with help of metal insert and looks a bit off in overall styling. Well, maybe some people will be fine with such design cue.

We mentioned hands, and those parts deserve separate word. I like how polished angled surfaces were used here in order to get this sharp look. In my opinion it reminds of old swords and katanas. Maybe that’s why they come covered with angled glass – so nobody will get hurt with those sharp details.

Wind-swept snow in the mountains of Shishu now comes in blue color.

Movement

Inside you will find typical Spring Drive movement which is usually installed into Grand Seiko watches. It can be appreciated through rear transparent caseback. Power reserve equals to 72 hours.

Watch comes with leather strap. We get classic croco finish here with beautiful clasp. I would rather opt out for smooth leather in order to complete look of the new watch.

Grand Seiko SBGA407 – Price

Price for this watch is set at 5800 USD. Here we get into a quite tricky area where amount of all possible alternatives goes out of reasonable count. I am not even mentioning used market. As I said, Grand Seiko is the bold statement on its own. Somehow with years I appreciate look of those watches more and more. Today’s model has all the chances to become modern classic, so I would recommend to check it if you are ready to have such sharp handset on your wrist. 😉
