Breitling Aviator 8 Mosquito Copies Onboard Clock

Aviation and this watchmaker are strongly interconnected in our minds. Well, today we are going to talk about new release – Breitling Aviator 8 Mosquito. This watch is dedicated to the famous British aircraft. As you understand from the name of this preview, new watch was created in the same style as onboard clock on De Havilland airplane. Let’s check what it has to offer.

Wooden Wonder

What you can see above is one of the nicknames for Mosquito. Twin-engine aircraft was faster than Spitfire, all thanks to use of wood. This airplane served in many different tasks and proved to be useful in fighting against Nazis. Mosquito was serving up to 1950’s when it became outdated because of jet engines technology. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see what Breitling used in the new watch in order to hint on the aircraft from De Havilland.

Onboard Elegance

Watchmaker decided to copy appearance of the clock from the aircraft. This part was marked as ref.765 AVI and produced by Huit Aviation Department. Here I have to remind that this department was founded by Breitling in 1938 in order to produce time measuring equipment for military vehicles. It is safe to say that new model actually reincarnates old clock, and now you can have it on your wrist. Small note – Huit in French means “Eight” what actually hinted on the power reserve – eight days.

Of course, each clock had clear and easy to read dial layout. We get the same finish on the new watch. Breitling Aviator 8 Mosquito comes with big numerical on the dial. Those are accompanied with subidals for chronograph functions and date window at “5” mark. Such design might look a bit busy at the first sight, but actually is quite handy and should be fine in everyday use. Small touch I would like to note – dark-colored date window which doesn’t break overall style.

It is susprising that hands are finished in bright orange color. Such design will add to usability and add a bit of color to overall dark styling. Each hand is covered with Super-LumiNova, so it should be visible in dark.

Case Design

Unlike Mosquito, this watch features stainless steel case. Size is measured at 43mm what should be completely fine for everyday use. ADLC coating on bezel should come handy in order to keep everything in a good state and avoid scratches. It provides even darker finish in comparison with typical DLC one which was used on previous models. Manufacturer claims that it reminds of Mosquito night version which was painted in dark colors. Well, it looks good and I am fine with it.

Movement and Accessories

Silver subdials here hint on Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01 mechanical movement inside. Power reserve is clocked at 70 hours and it should be fine for such watch. Note that this watch is also COSC-certified chrono which features 100 m water protection. You can appreciate the beauty of the calibre through clear rear cover. Small note – there are 346 components used in this movement.

New model comes only with leather strap and you will be able to choose the clasp type. Well, I would be glad to see this watch on NATO or ZULU strap. Such addition would add to military look of the Aviator 8. Of course, final decision will be after you.

Breitling Aviator 8 Mosquito – New Legend?

Fresh release should be available immediately. Swiss watchmaker succeeded again in making interesting-looking watch which is connected with aviation. Swiss calibre in such nice packaging should be a fine addition to your collection. I am not sure if leather strap is the right choice for aviation topic, but you can easily replace it. The only question which remains – why there is no wood, just like in original Mosquito? 🙂
